Overweight Dog Help

October 1, 2019

While in the clinic, you may hear your veterinarian talk about Body Condition Score (BCS). It is a scale from 1-9, with 5 being ideal. Taking into consideration weight distribution and the number on our scale, our staff can see where your pet fits. Using this information, we can better provide information about your dog’s activity level and/or food intake.

When is a dog considered to be overweight?

It’s just a little holiday weight. It was a cold winter. Any dog body is a beach dog body… right!? Dogs can be obese at any life stage. In fact, obesity in our canine friends is one of the most overlooked health concerns.

Are some breeds prone to obesity?

Any dog who is highly food motivated has a greater potential to be a little heftier around the middle (*cough cough* Beagles, Labs, and Pugs). Our healthcare staff are always happy to chat about your pet’s dietary needs.

Why should my dog have a weight loss consultation at the hospital?

Weight loss consultations can be booked with our technical staff from Monday through Saturday and are at no cost to you. Using the slim fit program powered by Royal Canin, we can find a diet plan that works for both you and your dog.
